We’ve had this one sent in from the kind folks over at JDO and we felt it was more than worthy of a post.

Here’s the press release from JDO:
“JDO Brand Design & Innovation has joined forces with Unicer Bebidas, the Portuguese brewery, to launch a range of premium, Super Bock craft beers brewed to recipes created in Unicers’ micro and mini breweries.

The brewery’s aim was to rekindle interest not only in Super Bock’s heritage but also the beer category itself, which is seeing a massive increase in the popularity of authentic craft beers.

Super Bock is Portugal’s most popular beer. Established in 1927, as well as being the only beer brand in the world to win 30 consecutive gold medals, the brand has consistently developed to become synonymous with quality and innovation. It is also seen as the beer of music and football in Portugal.

Lack of variety in the Portuguese beer category had begun to commoditise the beer experience for many Portuguese drinkers. However, the wine category has seen a huge surge in popularity, mainly due to its roots in a more natural process and consumers’ interest in its ingredients, flavours, tastes and provenance. Beer, on the other hand, had been perceived as being from a more industrial source. Unicer saw an opportunity to learn from the wine category and to create this authentic, premium craft beer range.

The resulting packs are available under the sub brand ‘Selecção 1927,’ endorsed by Super Bock and come in an elegant 75cl bottle or on draught. The label has been designed in such a way to enable range extension and the draught lens reflects the label design. Using a textured black paper and printed gold type, JDO have achieved a premium look with masses of taste and quality cues.

The first beer to launch is an Imperial Stout and defines the look and feel of the brand. Other recipes will quickly follow.”

The design on the bottle sticks with the tried and true, simple is elegant, featuring only the brand name, type of beer, alcohol percentage, volume and small brewery illustration which leads the consumer further down the craft beer path. Some may argue that the label is prehaps a little bare but the wine inspiration is clear in the design and with an elegant bottle and cork opening it can afford to be, especially when the category already contains more examples in this style. However the real proof will come when the beer goes on sale so I guess we’ll have to wait and see !

For more great work go check out the JDO website now.

Today we’re bringing you some great work from the talented folks over at Bulletproof design with their recently launched project for Amira Rice.

Here’s the low down from the Bulletproof website:
Brief:
Launch Amira rice into Global markets with a simple and confident look that conveys authenticity and quality. Emphasise modernity over ethnicity to re-inforce the brand’s heritage and provide clear differentiation from its competitors.

Our thinking and doing:
No grain of rice was left unturned! We kicked off the project by analysing the brand’s heritage, competition and category codes; our findings were gathered and filtered to inform our design brief. Being such a superior tasting product, communicating this superiority became fundamental to our brand expression and packaging designs. The name Amira (meaning princess) was a great tool to leverage for the brand icon, so we created a simple and elegant icon supported by a hand crafted proprietary font. We also delivered a palette of opulent golden tones offset with a kick of vibrant variant colour. The final design is confident, beautiful and simplistic – something only a true royal can deliver.

The design features an iconic indian inspired shape that houses both the logos main type and mark along with the brands tag line. This shape is then repeated on pack to house both the brands descriptor and colour code. Everything here has been confidently handled but the real stand out element of the design is the golden coloured packaging.

This addition has added something that truly differentiates the brand from the others on shelf and has given Amira a brand element that is uniquely theirs making this a well thought out solution that can be used not only on pack but in all off pack communications too.

Make sure you get yourself over to the Bulletproof website to check out more of their excellent work.

Today’s industry expert is Chris Weir’s, a UK based typographer who’s skilful hand has helped numerous world renowned brands look really rather good.

Here’s an excerpt on Chris taken from his website:
“Many years of creating designs, producing visuals, high finish roughs and final art for print also enabled Chris to develop an interest and understanding of how letterforms are created. By hand drawing thousands of typefaces using markers, brush and gouache, pen and ink, he gradually developed the skills required to be a lettering artist. It was during this period that Chris was also fortunate to spend several years working in the same studio as Letraset typeface designer Martin Wait, who generously imparted much of his knowledge and demonstrated many of his techniques.

Having previously established a varied and successful career in design, Chris has made it his business these days as a specialist creating bespoke lettering. He is aware each brand lettering project brings a different and unique set of challenges. His belief that the creative expertise he brings to brands and logos will clearly bring benefits to your brand project, continues to be recognised by a growing national and international clientele.”

Chris’s work really does speak for itself, so there’s little we can add. All we can really say is that it is obviously very clear that he is an extremely talented individual and that any design studio that uses him and his extensive skill set will never be let down.

To see more of Chris’s excellent work or contact the man himself get yourself to his website now.

“Collection of labels for Blackbird Winery. Main character is a blackbird, stealing the letters from the wine names.”

Regardless of the lack of information we love this design, it’s a charming little idea that needs little explanation and as such we’re sure it’s doing a great job of selling itself.

As always make sure you go check out the Studio Cuculic website or Behance page to see more of their excellent work.

Invented by Dairy farmer Jason Barber who was looking for other ways to sell the produce from his farm, Black Cow claims to be the worlds first pure milk vodka.

The design for the Vodka was produced by Mind Yourself, a London based design studio who specialise in Branding, Print and Retail Design, Packaging and Illustration.

Here’s the low down from the Mind Design website:
“We designed the overall identity and bottle for Black Cow Vodka which is made from milk in the Dorset countryside. Our logo was inspired by branding irons for cattle.”

As the description above states the design is a modern representation of a traditional branding iron mark, we think that may be pushing it a bit but the bottle still looks great with a modern and fresh imagine that represents the product well, so it really doesn’t matter.

Since launch the brand has steadily grown from strength to strength, starting out being sold in local farm shops and Delicatessens it has now to gained listing in high end retail stores such as Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason.

As always we highly recommend getting yourself over to the Mind Yourself website to check out more of their excellent work.

We would find that hard to believe but a quick look through the Vectorian website let us know that these guys are serious. As they say themselves “We have selected these classic vintage decorations from dozens of rare type foundry catalogs. Each from the Victorian era and the early 1900′s.” and that makes for an impressive collection that is sure to help any designer produce some truly great work.

So at this point there’s not much more for us to say other than to tell you to get yourselves over to the Vectorian website now and check out their rather amazing collection for yourself.

Today we’re bringing you a lovely new redesign from Spanish design talents Moruba and their work for the Hacienda, Lopez de Haro wine.

The wine, produced by Bodega Classica, who are based in the famous wine region of Rioja, retains many traditional Spanish wine design cues but then adds a modern twist with the use of a contemporary colour palette, bold ribbon device and modernized typography along with some fine detailing.

Moruba had a previously designed the bodegas logo along with the Hacienda, López de Haro wine all of which had previously established a modern look and feel to the winery. In keeping with this new style Moruba undertook a redesign of the wine to give it a more tradition feel without losing it’s modern edge. The result are outstanding, this is a great piece of work and one that the winery should be extremely proud of.

As always we highly recommend getting yourself over to the Moruba website to check out more of their excellent work.

Here at PDB headquarters we tend to be weary of free fonts, perhaps being burned too many times from sites like dafont has left us sceptical and somewhat cynical when it comes the issue, but every now and again a font comes along that grabs our attention as is the case with the well crafted and loving refined Calendas Plus.

The font designed by atipo, a studio made up of Raúl García del pomar and Ismael gonzález, was first released in 2010 but since that time has undergone a complete revision and subsequently has been re released in 2013 with all new ligatures and glyphs.

We absolutely love this font and the best thing is that it’s yours for free if you pay with a tweet, however for those not wishing to do so you can purchase directly from the website with donations starting at a mere €3.

Atipo has also designed several fonts which can be downloaded by visiting their respective websites so be sure to check them out below as well as the Atipo website and Behcnace where you see more of their excellent work.

Following on from Monday’s post here we have another great redesign for Dickinson & Morris by the talented folks over at WPA Pinfold.

Here’s the low down from WPA Pinfold:
Problem
Dickinson & Morris, part of the Samworth Brothers Group, has specialised in traditional pork pies since 1851 – it still runs the famous Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe based in Melton Mowbray. It has been perceived as a regional brand, with a relatively small share of this £150 million market.
The challenge was to relaunch and reposition its pork pies as an added value contemporary classic (the ultimate pork pie), with national presence.

Solution
We revitalised the brand by crafting the typography and incorporating the unique ‘hand raised’ pork pie shape into the brand’s shield. We also created a brand story and reinforced its provenance to reinforce it’s recently acquired Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.
All the packaging formats have been redesigned and new range innovations have been developed to target the ‘grab and go’ sector of the market.

Results
In the first year of relaunch, sales increased by over 20% and several major national accounts were won (including Waitrose).

This redesign is a clear logical step that has evolved the brand and enhanced it’s key attributes through the use of a redesigned shield emblem, bold yet restrictive colour palette, elegant typography and repeating pattern that features a redesign D&M motif. Combined these elements have lead to a cohesive range of products that communicates quality and tradition… so that’ll be a job well done then !

Make sure you you get yourself over to the WPA Pinfold website to check out more of their great work.
